Ohio deer hunting season: Here are the dates and rules

This week marked the start of autumn, meaning the daylight hours are getting shorter and the nights longer. The transition also means that hunting season has arrived in Ohio.

It's time to set your alarm clocks for the crack of dawn, because the first fall hunting season begins with squirrels on Sept. 1 and runs until Jan. 31, 2023. 

But if hunting squirrels isn’t exactly your bag of nuts, then you won’t have to wait long for the next season to begin.

There are four hunting seasons for white-tailed deer in Ohio, with deer archery kicking off Sept. 24.

Here's what you need to know about Ohio's deer hunting seasons.

If you hunt for white-tailed deer in Ohio, here are the rules to follow: 

 Public hunting areas in Ohio can be found on the ohiodnr.gov website.

Different counties specify how many deer can be harvested by a single hunter in a given season.

Two-deer counties: Geuga, Harrison, Jefferson, Belmont, Monroe, Warren, Clinton, Greene, Fayette, Pickaway, Hocking, Vinton, Jackson, Galia and Lawrence.

Four-deer counties: Hamilton, Franklin, Lucas, Cuyahoga and Summit.

The remaining counties in Ohio are three-deer counties. 

Yes, you need a license to hunt in Ohio. Here are the different types: 

Hunting licenses can be purchased from authorized agents or on the wildohio.gov website and the HuntFish Oh mobile app. 

Youth licenses range from $10 for one year to $430.56 for a resident youth lifetime hunting license. Adult licenses range from $19 for a resident one year license to $449.28 for a resident lifetime hunting license.
