Roadworks across Plymouth include next phase of new cycle route - Plymouth Live

The complete Southway to Plymbridge scheme, part of the Transforming Cities Fund programme, will provide 4.7 km of off-road strategic cycle network.

Further work is to get under way this week on plans for a cross-city cycle route. Plymouth City Council has ambitions to connect Southway all the way to leisure opportunities on the Plym Valley Trail.

The complete Southway to Plymbridge scheme, part of the Transforming Cities Fund programme, will provide 4.7 km of off-road strategic cycle network. Phase 2, at Plymbridge Road East is expected to finish by November 2022.

And from Friday, as a result of works on the scheme, two-way traffic signals will be in place on Plymbridge Road. This will to required to enable the works to be carried out.

From Friday, June 17, until Wednesday, June 29, for 24 hours a day, there will be two-way signals between Earls Wood Drive and Bush Park on Plymbridge Road. These will be controlled at peak times.

The final scheme includes the widening of the existing footway to provide a traffic-free walking and cycling route on the south side of Plymbridge Road from Earls Wood Drive to the recently improved path connecting to Miller Way via Durris Gardens, while two new signalled crossing points, and two uncontrolled crossing points of Plymbridge Road for pedestrians and cyclists.

There are also improved crossings for pedestrians and cyclists on Thornbury Road (East and West) and Bush Park, and to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, additional lengths of double yellow lines on Plymbridge Road, just to the east of Wrigleys roundabout and Thornbury Road.

It comes as Plymouth City Council has said that they ‘do not have a magic wand’ to solve the traffic chaos seen daily in the city. Long delays, especially around the A386 Tavistock Road, have been a daily occurrence in recent months.

The council has apologised and admits that the situation is frustrating, but that there are reasons why some of the works have had to be carried out at the same time. And they said that while they are doing their best to mitigate for disruption, they do not have a magic wand and delays are unfortunately inevitable.

Plymouth City Council has helpfully put out a list of roadworks that will be taking place across the city over the next week. The council is responsible for coordinating works carried out by utility companies, developers and other organisations as well as their own repair, maintenance and improvement works.

They maintain all public roads in Plymouth except the A38, which is managed by Highways England on behalf of the Department for Transport.

“We know there's no good time to close roads, especially on busy routes and we do everything we can to co-ordinate planned works and minimise their impact on our transport network,” a City Council spokesman said.
