Last month, the plan was to get scaffolding for La Salle's shaky Maytag building. But, that's not the plan NOW at 801 First Street.

In July, Wendler Engineering examined the place and found several walls leaning. They urged immediate attention and the city understood that CL Enterprises, the owner, was ordering scaffolding.

But at Monday night's Council meeting, Alderman Jerry Reynold's said CL will not put up scaffolding. They're waiting on a new contractor to size things up and make a decision. The thinking now is that new construction inside and out may solve the problem. Here's Reynolds and the council talking it over:

After the meeting, Reynolds expressed confidence things will work out. He admitted to not having seen the inside of the Maytag building, but, added, many critics probably haven't either. Reynolds does not know the name of the new contractor and would not commit to a completion date. CL Enterprises and Reynolds have had 5 weekly meetings and another comes up Monday.
