1921 — Molla Bjurstedt Mallory beats Mary Browne, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to win the U.S. women’s national tennis title at the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia.
1931 — Helen Wills Moody beats Eileen Bennett Whitingstall 6-4, 6-1 to capture the women’s title in the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association championship.
1944 — Robert Hamilton upsets Byron Nelson in the final round 1 up to win the PGA Championship.
1960 — Holland’s Hairos II, driven by Willem Geersen, wins the second International Trot at Roosevelt Raceway before a record crowd of 54,861.
1995 — Monica Seles completes a remarkable first week back in tournament tennis, routing Amanda Coetzer 6-0, 6-1 to capture the Canadian Open. Her 74 games sets a tournament record for the fewest played by a champion.
2000 — Tiger Woods wins the PGA Championship in a playoff over Bob May, becoming the first player since Ben Hogan in 1953 to win three majors in one year. He’s the first player to repeat as PGA champion since Denny Shute in 1937.
2003 — The U.S. wins the women’s overall team gold medal at the gymnastics world championships. It is the first gold for the Americans — men or women — at the biggest international event outside the Olympics.
2004 — Michael Phelps matches Mark Spitz’s record of four individual gold medals in Olympic swimming by winning the 100-meter butterfly. He edges teammate Ian Crocker to win his fifth gold medal. Shortly after winning his seventh medal of these Olympics, Phelps gives up his spot in the medley relay to Crocker.
2006 — Tiger Woods wins the PGA Championship for a five-shot victory over Shaun Micheel and his 12th career major. He becomes the first player to win the PGA twice on the same course, having done so at Medinah in 1999.
2008 — Usain Bolt of Jamaica breaks the 200-meter world record, winning in 19.30 seconds at the Beijing Games. He is the first man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to sweep the 100 and 200 at an Olympics.
2012 — Augusta National invites former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first female members since the club was founded in 1932.
2016 — Allyson Felix and LaShawn Merritt anchor the 4x400 relay teams, and the U.S. exits the final night of action at Olympic Stadium with 31 medals — its most in a non-boycotted Olympics since 1956. The U.S. women’s basketball team beats Spain 101-72 for a sixth straight title.
2018 — Alabama becomes the second team to be ranked No. 1 in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll for three straight seasons. The preseason AP poll started in 1950 and since then only Oklahoma from 1985-87 had started No. 1 in three straight years.(Month. Date)

Last season, 30 major college football programs made coaching changes. They included Southern California, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and LSU. Will this season be quieter? Not necessarily. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo says a number of coaches are on the hot season even before the season begins. They include Nebraska's Scott Frost and Auburn's Bryan Harsin.
Police in Las Vegas say former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch was asleep and smelled of alcohol when he was found in his damaged sports car this week and arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Lynch’s attorneys responded Thursday with a statement saying Lynch was in a parked car, not driving, and a DUI charge won't stick. The arresting officer says police found markings suggesting Lynch’s black Shelby GT500 hit sidewalks before stopping in an industrial part of downtown Las Vegas. The 7:30 a.m. Tuesday arrest came after the Seattle Seahawks announced Monday that Lynch had been hired as a team broadcast special correspondent. In 12 NFL seasons, Lynch also played for the Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders.
George Karlaftis took a circuitous route to the NFL, but he's making the most of his opportunity now that he has arrived. The first-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs had a sack in his preseason debut last weekend in Chicago, and he has drawn rave reviews from teammates and coaches alike in training camp. It's hard to believe that Karlaftis, who was born in Greece, did not even try football until moving to the U.S. in middle school less than a decade ago.
It's championship or bust for Nick Saban and Alabama. Saban called Alabama’s 2021 oh-so-close football season “kind of a rebuilding year” on a radio show shortly before the start of preseason camp. Players stroll by a “participation trophy” from the national title game loss to Georgia in the cafeteria every day. Led by Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young and national sack leader Will Anderson Jr., the Crimson Tide are preseason No. 1 and looking every bit a contender for the seventh national championship of Saban’s tenure.
Highly touted blue-chip prospects often arrive on campus with fans' expectations very high, almost to the point of unfairness. Some relish the pressure, and meet those expectations, and others bide their time and await their chance to shine. The player under the most scrutiny, perhaps, didn't even go to a Power Five school. Travis Hunter instead picked Jackson State, where he plans to play cornerback and receiver for coach Deion Sanders. And Hunter welcomes the opportunity to show the skills that made him the top recruit in the country.
The Big Ten has announced its new, seven-year media rights deal with Fox, NBC and CBS that is believed to be the richest ever struck with a college sports conference. A person familiar with the contracts tells The Associated Press that the conference's soon-to-be 16 member universities eventually will share more than $1 billion in revenue per year. Starting in 2024, when USC and UCLA join the conference, Big Ten football Saturdays will be structured similar to the NFL. That means three marquee games being carried in consecutive time slots on three different major TV networks.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Will Zalatoris had the most money and the best world ranking of anyone without a PGA Tour victory. He changed that Sunday by winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship without making birdie in a three-hole playoff.

The realignment in the major conferences could lead to fewer opportunities in the future for Group of Five teams to play those bigger schools. Cincinnati was the first G5 team to make the College Football Playoff last year when its undefeated regular season included road wins over Notre Dame and Indiana. But the games most G5 and FCS schools play against the Power Five teams are about the paycheck they get to help finance their programs. The SEC and Big Ten are both set to expand to at least 16 teams over the next few seasons. The other Power Five leagues also are going through transitions.
Minnesota running back Mo Ibrahim has returned for a sixth season. Quarterback Tanner Morgan, center John Michael Schmitz and wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell have, too. They’ve nicknamed themselves the “Encore Four." These super seniors have been with the Gophers since coach P.J. Fleck arrived in 2017. Ibrahim's decision to come back after a torn Achilles tendon ended his 2021 season was the catalyst for the others to join him. The Gophers will be breaking in plenty of new starters this year on both lines. Minnesota opens the season on Sept. 1 against New Mexico State.
