Two workers died on Monday when the suspended platform they were using failed and dropped to the ground from the 20th floor of a residential building on Conduit Road at the Mid-Levels.

The pair were said to be preparing for a project that requires scaffolding when the tragedy unfolded.

They were certified dead on the scene and police officers have put up green tents to cover the bodies.

It is understood that the steel cable connecting the platform to the roof has snapped, with the platform shattered to pieces after the fall.

The Labour Department (LD) also deployed staff to the scene upon receiving the report of the accident, and is now conducting an investigation to look into its cause.

"We issued suspension notices to the contractors/employer concerned suspending the erection, alteration, dismantling and use of suspended working platforms on the premises. The contractors/employer cannot resume the work process until the LD is satisfied that measures to abate the relevant risk have been taken," a spokesman said.

The LD expresses its deepest sympathies to the victims' families.
