UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A construction mishap caused a sidewalk shed to collapse Tuesday afternoon at an Upper East Side residential building, injuring three workers and forcing authorities to cordon off the street.

The collapse happened shortly before 4 p.m. at 220 East 65th St., a residential building between Second and Third avenues. A photo posted by the NYPD's 19th Precinct showed the sidewalk shed sprawled out across the driveway of the 26-story building, known as The Concorde.

Workers were setting up the shed when part of it collapsed, a spokesperson for the Department of Buildings said.

One worker was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital with minor injuries, while two other workers declined medical attention at the scene, the DOB spokesperson said.

East 65th Street was closed between Second and Third avenues while authorities responded to the collapse. The sidewalk shed company has been ordered to dismantle and remove the collapsed structure, DOB said.

DOB also issued a violation to the contractor for failing to safeguard the worksite, the spokesperson said.

At least one part of the sidewalk shed had been up for two months in front of the building, with permits allowing it to remain in place until January 2022, according to the city's map of active permits. Covering 600 feet of sidewalk, it was set up to comply with Local Law 11, the city law that requires buildings to undergo regular facade inspections.
